Stories from the Exile - Psalm 8
Yahweh, our Lord,
how great is your name through all the earth.

Above the heavens
your majesty is chanted
by all the children
dwelling on the earth.
You raised your citadel
firm against your foes,
rebels and enemies
prowling round in the darkness.

As I look up tonight
the moon and stars shine bright
set in place by the finger of your hand.
What is man that you should care for him,
the son of man that you should look for him
far below your greatness?

Yahweh, our Lord,
how great is your name through all the earth.

No less than a god,
crowned with splendour.
You raise his feeble frame
high above all things.
The work of your hands
you put beneath his feet,
birds of the air, fish in the sea
traveling through the ocean paths.
What is man that you should care for him,
the son of man that you should look for him
far below your greatness?

Yahweh, our Lord,
how great is your name through all the earth.
Background

I wrote this song in a small church on the Tuscolo hill above Frascati in the Alban hills south of Rome. The church was a 16th century chapel attached to the former Cappucian monastery and had a lovely echo.

Psalm 8 is a song about man's place in creation and I wanted the melody and guitar work to sound very spacious. The lyrics are fairly faithful to the original but I tried to improve on the poetry. I might get burnt for that.
